I can’t say much more except that yes, for sure, we are going to do Podcamp Halifax in 2010.   Once we confirm the location, we will be updating the wiki where people will be invited to offer their presentation on whatever topic interests them.    Then, we’ll open up the Eventbrite site like we did last year.   Also, if you have Google Wave, you can find a Wave that discusses possible presentation topics.  Just do a search for ‘with:public podcamp’ and you’ll find us!   The twitter tag is podcamphfx, just like last year.

Last year we sold out all 200 available tickets and put 50 more in a waiting list.   That means you probably want to book yourself in early!   The event will still be free, and yes, we will be looking for sponsors.

Make sure you bring $10 with you so you can bring home this classy t-shirt commemorating the inaugural Podcamp Halifax. It’s good for the office, social occasions, weddings, dates and job interviews. Trust us.

So much for thinking we would have about 100 people!   On Thursday, January 15th, we sold out the last of 200 tickets to Podcamp Halifax!    We are absolutely overwhelmed by the response for this event and cannot wait to meet everyone.

We do have a waiting list available.   You can get on the waiting list by contacting either Craig or Ryan via Twitter  or sending an email to podcamphalifax [at] gmail.    We are going to do our best to make sure that everyone who really wants in gets to come.

Two generous volunteers have already started up our Adopt-a-Podcamper program to match visitors with free lodgings courtesy of local social media enthusiasts. Hey, if you can hit them up on Twitter then you can certainly crash on their couch, right? If you’re looking for a place to rest your head after a long day of innovation, you can submit your name here and we’ll do all we can to help you out.Also, for anyone with an extra bed in the Halifax area, please let us know if you’re able to host a Podcamper. Don’t worry, they shouldn’t need much more than some triscuits and a wifi connection…

HALIFAX, NS – When online video entrepreneur Craig Moore volunteered to help organize something called a ‘Podcamp’ in Halifax, he never could have anticipated the excitement that would be sparked. 

“When we started, we thought we would gather 30 or 40 of our friends together to chat about podcasting and blogs,” said Moore. “When we finally announced that we were doing it, we immediately had replies from people who had booked their flight that day from Toronto.”

Already popular throughout North America and Europe, a Podcamp uses an ‘unconference’ format to facilitate discussions about blogs, wikis, YouTube, Facebook and other collaborative online tools. Craig’s idea transformed from a simple fireside chat to a community town hall filling up a public library with discussion about everything from how to un-friend people on Facebook to legal issues caused by Social Media. 

“We’re already attracting people from all walks of life,” said Ryan Deschamps, a librarian, blogger and champion for social media in Halifax. After joining the podcamp discussion, he connected the event with the Halifax Public Libraries, securing the Alderney Gate Library as a venue. “The online world has a much larger reach than just techies. So many different types of people are online, all contributing to its community.” 

“Libraries have always been about sharing ideas. Books are one way to do that, community events like podcamps are another,” said Deschamps who alongside Jon McGinley and Ben Boudreau from Revolve forms the planning committee. “We’re very excited to help host the very first one in the Atlantic Provinces.”

The free-of-charge event will take place at 9:00 a.m., January 25 at the Alderney Gate Library. In typical social media style, the presentations will be available through podcast, online video and Twitter updates. Speaking opportunities and registration details can be found on the Podcamp Halifax website (http://podcamphalifax.ca).

Social media is amazing.   We haven’t even touched traditional promotion and two months ahead of the game we have 40 people registered and thirteen presentations offered.   Many of those who have offered presentations haven’t registered yet.   Go figure.  :)  We have people confirmed to be coming from as far as Toronto, St. John’s and Moncton.  

Giles Crouch has also offered what is likely to be a landmark presentation on the state of social media in the Atlantic Region.   Knowing a little bit about the data here, the tone of his presentation is “unrealized opportunity.”  For instance, have you seen the Google Trends results for “Facebook” in the Canada region?  

While I can’t tell you everyone who is coming, I can say they come from all walks of life.   We have business focussed people, community-focussed people and people who are a blend of both.     Some members of the media have already signed up, and we haven’t sent out a press release announcement yet.   You probably want to register sooner than later, though.   Once we put out our promotions, you could be too late! 

And if you don’t think you can make it, rest assured that we will be live-streaming the key presentations via U-Stream and distributing video on the internet.  

In the next few days, I will be providing some video footage of the venue — the Alderney Gate Library — showing you what the environment is going to look like when you arrive.    A logo is just about ready to be launched and you should not be surprised to see some traditional media getting interested in the next little while.

Yes, it’s true.   We have opened up both a registration site, a presentation matrix on the Podcamp 2009 Wiki (invite key is “alderney”) and added a page to the site on how to sign up.

  If you do sign-up, make sure you link yourself up well — you never know, we might highlight your presentation in a later blog post!
